weeknotes #41: movies, cheap eats, and a lucky duck
Movie theatres or cinemas are possibly my least favourite places in the world. For as long as I can remember, I have been unable to sit still while watching a movie, constantly distracted by something else, including my own mind wandering. Regardless of how well I control my intake of fluids in the hours before a movie, I always need to empty my bladder at least once during a movie. Christopher Nolan can get fucked (sorry, not sorry), and the last 45 minutes of Interstellar were completely unnecessary. Thatās my unpopular opinion, though. My friend Chris (š!) also said, āPeter Jackson needs to learn how to editā. I will admit to Get Back being worth the watch, but it definitely dragged on. Again, my opinion, as I am biased and like the Beatles.
It would be nice if there were more accessible experiences for movies these days. Less ads at the beginning, please? Can it not be so dark inside? Can the volume not be so loud? Is… is it too much to ask for a very brief intermission just to take a piss?
We watched Deadpool & Wolverine last week, Chris being slightly surprised that he managed to get me to watch a movie. Me? Watch a movie? At the theatre? He did say, however, that he figured I might be up for it since it was Deadpool.
The original Deadpool is one of my favourite movies. It is perhaps the only movie Iāve watched straight from beginning to end without being distracted or needing to use the restroom. It definitely holds a special place in my heart, because the humour is up my alley, too. I am a potty mouth and I do make crude jokes. It should be no surprise that I have re-watched the movie a handful of times.
Deadpool & Wolverine was the first movie I watched in several years. I still had to empty my bladder once because I brought a cup of coffee (batch brew, mind you) into the theatre, which I needed to keep me awake. I couldnāt sit still during the movie and it brought me comfort just to shake my leg. You know, the usual. I also bought an apple from the supermarket because I just didnāt have it in me to spent $2.70 on a protein bar or some processed food. I dunnoāwe were looking at snacks and my stomach just didnāt feel like a bunch of processed food.Ā It is massively unconventional to eat an apple in a theatre, I get it. I had to pause consumption during a very sombre scene so as not to distract people with an offensiveĀ crunch! crunch!
I forgot how much the apple was. Lunch, though, was $10, as Ippudo Ramen had a $10 deal for the first of the month. Iām totally penny pinching right now since I am saving money for an upcoming holiday.
In a similar vein, we went to Oiden for dinner where Mitch joined us before we met up with a couple of others for karaoke. Oiden is a cheap eat and has been since the early 2010s, if not earlier. Itās 100% a student-budget-friendly food option. I donāt even think inflation has affected the price much. You can get a ontama salmon don (salmon and egg with rice) for under $12, and I think one of the cheapest items is $7.50. I think prices have literally only gone up by a dollar in 12 years. And donāt you dare tell me itās literally just salmon on rice. IĀ fucking know, which is why Iām laughing as Iām typing this sentence. Please leave the dissing job to me and Geoff on our Toast & Roast podcast. š
Karaoke was fun, and I ordered this cocktail from the Lobo afterwards. Itās called āToo Luckyā and itās vodka based with pear, apple, and lemon flavours.
It literally comes with the duck. The others were so enthralled by the presentation of the cocktail (and the duck) that they got one too, and we collectively decided we were āallowedā to take the duck home since we paid for it.
