Fashion Friday: Hikari

As the days seem to fool me into thinking they are warmer, I’m still attempting to get used to the cold because something about snowmanning myself in layers is so uncomfortable! I’d rather wear less layers.

The weather was a little nicer on the day I wore this outfit, so I made do with a jacket, the one featured in the Lapis Lazuli edition of Fashion Friday.

I’m wearing a top from Dangerfield, which I picked up because I wanted nicer tops that were more simple, but still looked stylish and comfy. I got it along with the skirt from my outfit How not to hate pink, and they go well together! I have eyed a lot of the clothes from Dangerfield because they tickle my inner sixteen-year-old punk rocker, but I never felt like buying anything.

This top was nice to wear with the skirt but I decided to wear it with my denim skirt from my Milk & Cookies outfit, because it hadn’t got a lot of wear lately. I wanted to dress with a bit of a casual edge, too.

As you can see, this outfit is a mix of other Fashion Friday posts, the boots being from my recent outfit Wanderlust and the sunglasses from Piña Colada. I sort of had a bit of an ‘epiphany’ this week and caught myself meticulously picking out a Fashion Friday outfit again. If I’m standing there trying to brainstorm an outfit just so it can debut on my blog, then I’m not being very real about it. I was going to do an outfit with a knitted cardigan just because I hadn’t included it in a post yet, but Nick pointed out that it looked like crap (hmm, the colour was also brown) and wasn’t really my style.

That’s why I’ve come full circle with this outfit – I’ve put it out there that Fashion Friday should be a representation of myself, day-to-day, and what is my style. In light of my previous post on Smart shopping tips for a minimal wardrobe, it doesn’t matter if I wear the same shoes and jackets. I love them. :) So there’s no shame in having pieces I’ve mixed and matched from other outfits. You guys deserve to have a better idea of my wardrobe and style!

Because of that, I’ve named this edition Hikari, which was originally suggested by Tara, named after the Kingdom Hearts song by Utada Hikaru, and that means ‘light’ in Japanese. This outfit is a light one indeed, not just in colour but in style. Interestingly enough, the English version of the song is titled ‘Simple and Clean’, and when I struggled to think of why the outfit might be Japanese-inspired, I only had to remember that the striped bow was like a sailor’s, and as coincidence would have it, Sailor Moon was the first anime I watched. :D I’ve actually never played any Kingdom Hearts, so I wouldn’t say this outfit was inspired by it, but I like to think I’d kick some serious ass in these boots.

Accessories were pretty minimal, but I did pick these earrings to match the purple ring I wear every day. I don’t own many brightly coloured earrings, so I went for it because the quality was also very good.

I LOVE DANGERFIELD haha. Retro/mod/indie type stuff is my style. Annoyingly I don’t always fit into their clothes (with the dresses, the top part is often way too big, even if the dress fits at my waist :( Curse being pear-shaped!). So I really do like the top you’re wearing.

I like the whole outfit, too. I don’t think I could get away with wearing a denim skirt, especially one that short, but it looks amazing on you. You have the lovely petite body type to pull it off :)

And yes, definitely agree with you about keeping it real for Fashion Friday! Just wear what you’d normally wear, even if we see you wearing the same things :) It’s good to show us how you mix and match items to create new outfits. I love seeing that!

Haha thanks Jess! I used to wear a lot of clothes that were retro/punk but I know I don’t 100% have the confidence to pull it off sometimes. I have been told that my small shape helps me pull off the denim miniskirt look, too! I have wide hips but I am probably somewhat of an upside-down triangle shape.

Over the past few days I have liked mixing and matching my favourites, so I look forward to sharing more outfits where I can refer to other posts the pieces were featured in. :D

I think you fit the Hikari theme very well by keeping things light, simple, and clean :D I really adore the top! I hadn’t noticed the bow looking like a Sailor Moon thing until you mentioned it, though, haha! That’s a very cool connection, Georgie! :D

I also think this is a great winter-to-spring outfit. You have the “winter” colour and style going on, but the lightness of it also signals spring to me.

Thanks for featuring another one of my FF theme suggestions, Georgie! I really enjoy how you interpret them! ^^

Thanks Tara! I think I was a bit sneaky working the name in… but it does seem that stripes give a general nautical feel. :P

I look forward to trying your other suggestions some time, I have a couple of small ideas for them both.

Hikari is perfect to describe your style! ^^ I also love that song, too. Utada Hikaru is a wonderful and powerful singer, I believe wholeheartedly. I really like how you kept it light and simple for the theme, which makes it even better for you. I love your style, and your level of taste, honestly. You’re great at pairing up different articles of clothes and making it work.

I just kind of make my own style, mismatching along the way, but still I’m jelly that you’re so good at your fashion sense. One day, I hope I’m that great, too. Regardless, you look beautiful, Georgie! ^^ And thank you for your comment on my entry. I appreciate it. You’re awesome, yourself!

Thanks so much Michelle! If you ever need some tips or advice related to fashion, let me know, feel free to email me. I would be happy to help. :) I have to admit that one’s style grows with time, and I used to wear clothes that looked like what the character Sheldon Cooper would wear — nerd shirts with a long-sleeved t-shirt underneath. It’s what I felt comfortable wearing at the time but now that’s changed.

Let me know about anything you think mismatches though – sometimes I still wear dark and obscure band t-shirts with girly skirts, and it can work. :D A general rule I have is: if you have a dressy or very decorative piece, wear a simple piece to go with it. A top with a beaded collar would go well with plain black jeans, and a really frilly skirt would go well with a simple plain coloured shirt.

I LOVE that jacket! I’d like to get one in that same style, but the only ones I’ve seen are at this store called Papaya and they’re a bit of an oddball place in terms of product quality and pricing. The ones I’ve tried on have either been too short or too small round the shoulder areas (apparently I have rather broad shoulders but I can’t really tell). It’s probably for the best–I dress very down way too much and just wear my Gryffindor hoodie jacket all the time anyways XD;;

You look smokin’! I love that first picture of you in the sunglasses. I wish our winters were such that I could make do with a light jacket! D:

I like the little change of hairdo you did on the first picture. Your face looks so smooth!!! I don’t think I am ready to tie my bangs back yet XD. Your boots are really cute, with the suede look, I think? Also, bonus points for the heels not being pointy (I can’t seem to trust those @___@). You’re awesome at putting together these outfits ;)!

Thanks Nancy! I think it’s just the hair blowing my hair in a certain direction though, because I didn’t really tie it back. Sometimes I put half of it up, but if it’s long enough I can pin the side back. Still debating if I should get the front of my hair cut short again…

Yep, suede! Do you mean the thin heels as opposed to these thick ones? I get scared they will get stuck in gutters or uneven parts of the pavement. I hate that so much! As for pointed toes, they can be alright. :D

You look really cool in this outfit! I love that photo of you on top of the stairs with everything together. I like how the top is simple, but it has cute collar and sleeves. I think it goes well with your jacket and boots :) I think it makes sense to mix and match from other outfits. That way you use each piece more!
