As with all birthdays, most people don’t feel a day older, and for quite some time, they forget that they just turned a year older. They probably forget that they have to update their age on social media – ahem, for example Seb – who finally, eventually, decided that writing “in his twenties” was less tedious than writing his actual age.
Archives for Month: May 2015
I received my May shipment of my Sparkle Box subscription last week. I was a little excited to know what was inside because I picked the Subtle Style type, whereas last time I chose Avant Garde. While I used to wear over-the-top, bold jewellery as a teenager, my style has changed and I prefer to wear simple, classic pieces. The thing I like about this box in particular is that you can switch your style if you like.
It wasn’t until Holly announced her blog’s fourth birthday recently that I realised I have known her (at least online) for ages. I remember interacting with her before she had her current blog! It’s been lovely following her adventures all this time so of course I was happy that she wanted to do an interview!
I’m 21 years old and I live in Liverpool, UK. I have just finished my degree in geography and I’m already looking for a career change! I started blogging about 5 or 6 years ago, and during that time I have changed platforms and domains quite a few times.
I’m passionate about travel and I love a good adventure. I also enjoy reading comics, attending rock concerts and walks along the beach.
This week Nick and I spent four days in Hamilton Island, which is an island in the northern part of Australia, in the Great Barrier Reef. The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef system composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands. This post is about one of our days!
Nick and I have been holidaying in Hamilton Island this week, so today’s Fashion Friday was one he helped me photograph on our trip. I have more stories about our adventures here – today we went jetskiing and snorkelling, which was really fun, and we’re pretty tired, too. I will write more about our time here in a future post. 🙂
This Fashion Friday edition is a bit of a change from what we have been seeing recently, mostly because the weather up here in Queensland is like summer (but not ecstatically hot), and back home it’s raining and very, very cold. I am not really into the tropical climate and don’t like hot weather but around this time of year, Hamilton Island is not too hot.
Wow, did two months go by so quick? I guess we’ve all been busy… poor Lilian has been stressed out, actually, I feel like a real jerk because I know Nick is trying to balance working full time and studying full time as well (insert jerk comment about how I have totally been there before, so I know how it feels and I’m praying on magic and love to get him through). And I am just sitting here pretty much chillaxing (more on that point in a future post).
You (yep, you, the person reading this) may have noticed that I changed the smilies/emoticons on my blog. I was going to say “it’s been a long time coming” but it really hasn’t. It was only something I thought about a couple of months ago.
I think the thing that will shine through most with this change of smilies is that I believe a lot of people will miss the old ones, which were on my blog since 2009. It was an animated set with some very interesting emotions conveyed on some of the faces.
So now, I’ve decided to ditch and change them…
Following our trip to Thirlmere earlier this year for the Thirlmere Festival of Steam, Nick and I made our way back down to Thirlmere again, this time for Trainworks’ event A Day Out with Thomas, visiting none other than our childhood friend Thomas the Tank Engine. Of course, some time ago when I asked Nick if he liked Thomas the Tank Engine as a kid, he said, “Of course, that was my jam”.
You know when you have a writing streak? Or worse, before you’re even there – a writing itch? Heck yeah, I get it all the time. At least, all the time at the worst kind of time.
- On the train. But you’re standing up.
- On the bus. But you have to hang onto a pole.
- At 5:30pm on a Friday when you’re about to have drinks with your friends.
- Thursday afternoon after lunch but you have to return to work. Damn.
- Saturday night when you’re at the club… WTF?
- Some other Saturday night when you are seeing your favourite band – AKA the band of the century – and there’s probably gonna be a lot of moshing, so forget even thinking about what you want to write.
- On the weekend when you are driving your younger sibling to soccer practice or ballet class.
- At some just-my-luck moment in a cafe when you decide to stop surfing the internet and actually write but your laptop has 6% battery.
- Really late at night but your eyes are about to fall out of your head because your body wants you to sleep right now.
Been there? Yep. And you know you can do better than that, but you can’t even bother jotting down an idea that you have. I know. I’ve been there too. Like, what is the point in writing down an idea or a topic that you want to write about when you don’t even have an opportunity to write it right now?
Well, there is your mistake, my friend.
Monica doesn’t really need an introduction. You just need to read some of the things she writes or look at the photos she takes to get a glimpse into her perennially hilarious character. We have known each other for a long long time over the internet but coolly bumped into each other last year.
She wanted me to share her placeholder splash page that she designed for a university assignment. It kicks ass, and so does her third-person biography:
Monica is a cool design / IT gal who is currently having heart palpitations on her train ride home because a) she had spent 13 hours at university and she hasn’t slept for more than 4 hours since Saturday and b) she’s wearing a silk dress in fifteen degree weather. She hopes to fix her sleeping patterns in time for her 9-5 office job that she will get after she graduates uni in 2017. [insert peace-sign emoji]
